And so I finished watching Legend of Galactic Heroes, after almost a year. Can I say whew? While I love the show to death, I can’t possibly handle another one with such ambition, production values and sprawling cast. And the length. Sometimes wishing for a bit of filler isn’t a bad thing for long shows like these. Kidding. (spoilers after, do not read if you haven’t finished the show)
Anyways, the real deal that sealed LOGH for me was the characters. The plot was great, and had a lot of OH SHI- and FUCK YEAH moments, but I was rooting for people, not for ideologies or armies or sovereigns.
It comes as no surprise that I came to like Yang’s camp more than Reinhard’s. While Reinhard’s band of valiant subordinates are awesome in their own right, they’re still uppity admirals, and I admire them as a distant spectator. Yang’s people are different–they’re less soldiers than the Imperials, but ultimately more human. Everyone has distinguishable flaws of some sort, which makes them easier to empathize with. And I’d rather wear an Alliance uniform.
Let me compile a list of characters I liked, who aren’t the usual suspects (like Yang, Reinhard, Mittermeyer, Reuental or Schenkopp):
No surprise here. I love Poplin because he’s an awesome asshole. He’s like Roy Focker minus the tobacco and pineapple salad, plus more drinking, womanizing, and sheer survivability. After everything the show threw at him, he lives, despite having a job with high mortality rate. Die Kaiser!
If this was Romance of Three Kingdoms (and the comparisons are not at all unwarranted), Mashengo would be Dian Wei. Also, hilariously referred to Yang as an object.
Attenborough is strange. He’s almost as good as Yang, but only got to shine near the end. Given that, he’s a master of retreat, which I respect him for. Retreating a large fleet is harder than it sounds, and retreating to bait the enemy is even harder. But Attenborough pulls it off almost effortlessly. Also, he’s Poplin’s best bud, even if he won’t admit it, so he’s win by default. Foppery and whim, etc.
Jesus Minci was pretty annoying (especially during the Earth arc), but he became an okay guy in the end. Also, there are things that Yang cannot do that he achieved, like making an all-or-nothing push towards the Kaiser in his own ship. Such daring, such strength, such fortitude of will. Also credited with the final shot(s) that ended the fanatical Terrarism cult.
Karin-chan so moe~ :3 Will also kick your Valkyrie ass in a Spartanian.
Muller is hardcore, as shown by his tenacity in the Battle of Vermillion. Ironshield indeed. I guess he has Prevail and Support Defend L4, as well as a ton of tanking seishins. Can’t find a better guy holding your rear.
Nurse fetish, last stand. Also a member of Yang Wenli Fools Club, c/o Bagdashu. That bastard.
Runaway favorite. His crowning moment in that episode 106 was SO DAMN SWEET. Does his job and gets the girl! Marika ❤
Bittenfeld is a lovable bungler. He doesn’t belong in Reinhard’s group of admirals, because he has a big mouth and a short fuse. It’s like you gave a hotblooded grunt the title of an admiral and set him loose. But he’s a blast to watch. Don’t take him to the opera though.
Sorry, I’m still high from the show. Of course, I’ll be writing more about my thoughts as I get to collect them. Stay tuned for more LOGH goes in every field posts!
