12 Moments of Anime #5: Koi Koi For the World

What TTGL does with galaxies, Summer Wars does with a card game.

Natsuki’s clan challenges the Love Machine to a game of Hanafuda Koi Koi, where the world is at stake. Accounts are placed on bet, accounts stolen by the virus in order to wreak havoc on every man-made system imaginable. Thanks to their lifelong experience from playing with Grandma, they beat the virus a couple of times in a row, but then Love Machine strikes back and takes most of their winnings.

Unable to meet the betting minimum anymore, Natsuki succumbs to despair.

And that’s where everyone steps in to add their accounts to the pot. In a moment unprecedented in human history, the whole world unites behind the banner of Natsuki and her clan.

The final card is presented with much pomp and flourish that decisively tops Saki’s mahjong scenes. Only the strength of anime could make you so pumped up over such an otherwise trivial card game. Hooray for animation!

  1. The only issue I had with that particular sequence was the believability of it all, but by that time, you’re so overwhelmed with all the dazzling sights and sounds that logic plays second fiddle to all that is going around. Epic, that’s what it is!

  2. That German kid offering Natsuki his account burst the floodgates of tears in me TT______TT

  3. ToastCrust says:

    It was a really great scene ;A;
