The Sky Crawlers is a rather amnesia-inducing movie. There are long stretches of silence and idleness, and you may need to watch the film twice to understand things. I still have to do that.
That said, this was the most memorable moment for me:
Kannami and Suito party hard, in their own laid-back Kildren way. They get drunk, and stuff happens. But, in abrupt fashion, Suito points a gun at Kannami’s head. There was practically no lead-in to this scene, and the shock paralyzed me.
“Do you want me to kill you? Or are you willing to kill me?” she asks. As immortal slaves to a never-ending war, death is but a release. Suito wants to run away–she’s been through all of it. It would be a favor for both of them. But Kannami doesn’t answer–or his silence is enough of one.
And as they make out, their hands touch, with Suito’s finger still on the trigger. The shot lingers in my memory, for what reason I can’t really discern. But it sure was amazing.
