12 Moments of 2010 #12: Gotoh and Shinobu’s Night Out

This post is part of the 12 Days series.

One memorable part of the Patlabor franchise is the complex relationship between Gotoh and Shinobu. It’s a potpourri of grudging trust, condescension, friendship, and need I say, subtle flirting.

What better way to illustrate the whole thing, than by having the second OVA series to dedicate an entire episode to it?

The gist is: Gotoh and Shinobu are stranded in the rain, and spend the night inside a love hotel. Hilarity ensues.

It’s kinda hard to explain with words, so here’s some pictures!

Oh shi–

AND THEN

The amazing part of this episode is in the details. The dialogue, while not superbly witty, is full of subtext, while managing to still be innocuous at a cursory glance. There are minute facial expressions, hands that reach out then vainly pull back, as well as delicious bits of body language. It manages to create an atmosphere of constant tension. These two images above are from the climactic scene, which is one-and-a-half minute worth of deafening silence. I was at the seat of my pants the whole time.

It’s such a well-crafted episode, cementing my opinion of the Patlabor TV timeline having the best filler episodes around. There are far more crazy ones, like an Ultraman parody where Noa battles a kaiju-esque Griffon, a noir-ish tale of how Ota “murdered” most of the SV2, and a chronicle about how the SV2 mechanic team erupted into civil war after their secret porn stash got discovered.

But this one sticks in my mind the most.

Oh man, I really can’t wait to start watching Patlabor now.
