12 Moments of 2010 #10: Baoh’s Supreme Gem of Anime Writing

This post is part of the 12 Days series.

One of the shows that I filled this year’s Bad Anime Quota with is the legendary 80’s OAV named Baoh. The show has the dumbest writing ever, but at least it has the sense to look absolutely pretty. The gore is painstakingly animated to give you the most repulsive feeling ever, which I won’t post here. Be thankful.

There are no videos available to illustrate the moment in question, so here it is, in pictures:

Ikurou and Sumire are on the run from an evil organization, who has sent one of their best assassins after them.

Sumire has the ability to foresee the future. Here is one of her premonitions. It isn’t very useful, because…

…the assassin appears right afterward, and stabs Ikurou!

Ikurou pushes the assassin away, and shambles forward. The assassin, for no reason, just stands there and watches. It gets better.

Having enough common sense in them, Ikurou and Sumire flee by crossing the street. They dodge an incoming bus, and make their way to the other side.

Ikurou finds a motorcycle, which he steals by telling the owner to piss off and hops on it. Apparently, having a gaping wound in your stomach gives you an edge in arguments.

And they ride away. The assassin curses his luck, while standing there the whole time.

I had to repeat this scene a few times, for me and my brother to get the full effect. Did Hirohiko Araki really pen this manga? At any rate, more crazy stuff happens, as Baoh fights a Terminator ripoff, and then a psychic T. Hawk clone later on.

If you’re going to watch this show, make sure to watch the dub for maximum camp. This is non-negotiable.

LOL This is fantastic. I am definitely going to watch this.

(BTW, watching and enjoying Patlabor so far, though I’ll be going a bit slow with it at the beginning because Netflix suddenly put me on hold for the first Patlabor movie. >:O)

  2. kadian1364 says:

    *puts this on the list*

  3. Adding this to my list. Right this very minute. It seems so very necessary.

  4. DoctorBaronvonEvilSatan says:

The first thing I noticed was that weird . . . racoon thing with the huge poofy tail.
Definately watching this with the guys.

Yeah, master plan for the holidays.
Make some delicious food, pop open some bottles of good booze, put Baoh on, snark snark snark, FLEX!

Also, check out the guys on the motorcycle across the street. No way they can’t see the dude with that just got stabbed but they’re just like “Whatever”. We should go make an abridged version of this.

  5. 2DT says:

Why on earth did you watch Baoh?

… That said, wow, it’s a lot more beautiful than I remember it looking.

  6. Matt Wells says:

This is easily one of the greatest OVA’s of the 80’s. It is literally a non-stop thrill ride of ridiculously over the top gore, plot holes and inconsistencies big enough to drive a truck through, and a thumping synsthesiser score.

You should try tracking down the manga, especially if you’re an Araki fan. It’s no Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, but it features BAOOOHHH!!!! being able to smell evil, hiding inside gigantic mutant spiders, aforementioned Terminator guy electronically controlling giant bats, and Baoh fighting a genetically egineered ourangutan.

And you thought the OVA was batshit insane…
